Yoga and Hiking hostel in Gran Canaria

Manipa hostel is located in Agaete Gran CanariaAgaete

Agaete is located on the northwest coast of Gran Canaria. It is traditionally known for being a Canarian fishing village with a very popular seafood cuisine. Agaete is composed of three tourist attractions: the town of Agaete itself, Puerto de las Nieves and Agaete Valley, which is the only place in Europe where coffee is grown. The price of this handmade coffee is about 60 euros a Kilo and surprisingly few people know this exquisite limited production, which makes it even more exclusive. In the Valley of Agaete there are several plantations which you can visit and where you can taste wines and the precious coffee they grown by themselves. If you want to eat something in Puerto de las Nieves you can find restaurants where to eat the traditional local fish and you also can relax on the beaches and natural pools.

Within the municipality of Agaete there are other towns like El Risco where you can find some nudist beaches which are reached after a short walk and you can also visit the popular Charco Azul, which is a small lake formed by a waterfall; visit totally recommended. Another area to visit is the area of Barranco de Guayedra, where there is a naturist beach which also is reached after a short hike. This beach is an alternative to the beaches of Agaete if you are looking for a little peace and relaxation. You can find other areas in the municipality of Agaete like Sao, Hornillo or Los Llanos. If you like hiking, in this area there are some routes with incredible views.

Weather and culture

Agaete warm climate allows for year-round enjoyment of outdoor recreational activities. Its peculiar orientation ensures an average of 2,415 hours of sunshine per year and rains is irregular and scarce. Agaete is also very popular in summer due to the celebration of “La Rama” feast, one of the acts of the public celebrations held in honor of the Virgen de las Nieves of Agaete which has become a cultural reference in the Canary Islands.

In 1972 they were declared to be of National Tourist Interest. La Rama is a ritual in which thousands of dancers, dancing to the music of one of the bands of the town, go in search of the branch brought from Tamadaba pine forest and then they dance with these branches to the sanctuary of the Virgen de las Nieves in the harbor. The festive procession goes headed by “papagüevos” or “cabezudos” representing popular characters from Agaete.

Agaete is one of the places of Gran Canaria with the greatest variety of beaches.

Agaete beaches
The most popular is Playa de las Nieves. This pebble beach is located on the same port but do not worry because its waters are clean and crystal clear. The atmosphere is quiet and familiar and you can also eat the typical fresh fish at one of the fish restaurants in the area. The Beach Pier is located to the left of Agaete pier. This beach is sheltered from the wind by the pier itself which at the same time it is the meeting point for many locals who take advantage of banks to chat quietly. From this beach you can also see the Finger of God, a rock of basaltic stone that rises in the oldest geological area of Gran Canaria. The natural pools of Salinas also have a small rocky beach on the west side although the bathroom can sometimes be a bit tricky because of the waves.

East coast beaches
In the East area of Agaete there are a couple of beaches. The first is Playa de la Caleta or Turmán and is reached by following a path from the Turmán urbanization. The access is through some stairs that descend into the gorge until you reach a small beach. In the same direction but a little bit further east you get to the beach Juncal

West area beaches
The West region of Agaete is one of the wildest of Gran Canaria. In this natural environment full of high cliffs it is difficult to access to the beaches and small coves, even then it is worth visiting some of them. At the foot of the ravine Guayedra are two of them, at the right side we will find Sotavento beach and following the path to the right we find the beach Guayedra. This beach is accessible after a walk of 3km from Agaete (strongly recommended) or can also be reached by car. We park in the gorge and walk about 10 minutes.

Following westwards we will arrive at Roque Faneque, an impressive mountain of just over 1km hight. At its feet there is the beach of Faneroque. To reach this beach you need to get to La Laja del Risco and you just can do so at low tide. The walk is about 30 minutes approximately.

In the neighborhood of Risco de Agaete you find Playa del Risco. This beach is easily accessible and there are usually strong waves as it is very exposed.
